MPP and Associate Minister of Housing, Michael Parsa, visits Habitat Niagara build site
Affordable housing has been a concern for many as housing prices continue to become out of reach for people across Canada. Recently, Michael Parsa, MPP and Associate Minister of Housing, visited Habitat Niagara’s build site on Cedar Street in Welland to get to know more about the organization.
“We are in the final stages of building these two-unit semi-detached homes,” said CEO of Habitat for Humanity Niagara, Mark Carl. “Today’s visit was a fantastic opportunity for us to share what Habitat for Humanity is all about and the work we are doing in the Niagara region.”
Minister Michael Parsa also met the future homeowners who took him on a tour of their homes and told him what having a safe and stable home will mean to them and their families.
“I was grateful to visit with families who will soon call Cedar Street home to learn about the positive impact affordable homeownership will have on their future,” said Minister Parsa. “A house is not just four walls and a roof - it is a home that cultivates a strong sense of identity, independence, community, and family. We must create the conditions that ensure the dream of owning a home is in reach for all Ontarians from every walk of life and working with partners like Mark Carl and the outstanding team at Habitat Niagara, I know that we’ll get the job done.”
By the end of this year, Habitat Niagara will complete its 71st home in Niagara, serving 77 families and creating stable and secure housing for more than 270 children. Habitat Niagara has an ambitious goal over the next five years to build 30 homes and provide affordable homeownership opportunities to families who live and work in the Niagara region.
“Our focus is to help working, lower income families build strength, stability and financial independence through affordable homeownership,” said Mark. “Habitat remains ready to work alongside the Ontario Government, housing stakeholders and those in need of safe and affordable housing to develop sustainable solutions for the housing crisis.”
Habitat’s homeownership program creates stability and enables families to build a better future for themselves. Habitat’s path to homeownership is an important and in-depth process that requires hard work, time and commitment by the future homeowner family – which helps to ensure the long-term success of Habitat homeowners.
