Congratulations to our future Habitat homeowner’s who qualified for Habitat for Humanity’s homeownership program!
Habitat’s homeownership program is a ‘hand up’, not a ‘hand out’, as it provides qualified families a no down-payment and interest free mortgage for twenty years. Families who qualify for Habitat’s homeownership program must complete 500 hours of volunteering with Habitat Niagara and attend a series of workshops from Buying and Funding your Home, to Protecting your Home and Family.
Meet our 2020 -2021 future homeowners:
Chantel always knew about Habitat for Humanity, but never thought that one day she would become a Habitat homeowner.
When Chantel had her second child she realized that she wanted to reach that next level of life and get out of the cycle of rent so that she could eventually own a home and be able to leave something for her girls.
“Owning a home will give us motivation, as it is ours and I know one day it will be paid off and we will own it, " said Chantel. "It’s something we can build our roots in.”
Steve is a single father who is raising his four children between the ages of 8 to 13 on his own. His oldest son, Christian, suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, and because where they are living isn’t accessible, he cannot use his wheelchair in the house as the hallways and even the bathroom are too small for it; leaving him to crawl and rely on his father to carry him up and down the stairs.
“Just the fact that we will have our own home and that it will be accessible for Christian has given us a positive view of the future in a time with so much uncertainty," said Steve. "I was amazed at how personal this is, everyone knew my kid’s names and people care about us and want to help us.”
Life has been a rough ride for Jim, Tara and their three children. “We’ve had a lot of ups and downs in life,” explains Jim. “Every time we clawed our way up, life would knock us back down. Then Tara was diagnosed with Leukemia and being considered ‘medically disabled’ we had pretty much given up on ever owning a home. . . until we learned what Habitat offered.”
The place Tara and Jim have been renting has been in a constant state of disrepair and the neighbourhood has a lot of crime and theft, and as a result, they didn’t feel safe in their home.
“This is a dream we never thought would come true," said Tara. "I look forward to sitting down and having our first of many family dinners together and giving thanks to those who have made it possible.”
When Jodielynn was accepted into Habitat Niagara’s homeownership program she was overjoyed to be able to plan for a stable future for her and her daughter.
“It gives me such peace of mind knowing we will have a safe and affordable place, and for that I am eternally grateful," said Jodielynn. "Now I can determine the environment in which I will raise my daughter and I can be in control of our living conditions. It brings me such joy!”
