10 Steps to Habitat Home Ownership
The following steps outline the process of becoming a Habitat Home Owner.
- You must attend a Family Home Ownership Information Meeting where you will receive an application form.
- You must submit your completed detailed application to the Habitat Niagara office by the date specified on the application form.
- The Family Services Committee will review all detailed applications and qualify potential families through credit history checks, reference and employment checks, and other means.
- The Family Services Committee will make a home visit and interview the families who have been chosen to move forward in the selection process.
- All family members must be present for the in-home interview with the volunteers from the Family Services Committee.
- The Family Selection Committee will meet to evaluate families they have visited and select families to enter the Partnership program.
- Selected Family Partners will be presented to the Habitat Niagara Board of Directors for final approval. Selected families will be contacted. They will be asked to sign a Partnership Agreement and to begin their Sweat Equity.
- Families who are not selected will be notified and invited to re-apply when another property is available.
- Volunteers from the Family Services Committee will help families with their home ownership training and answer any questions they may have regarding Sweat Equity or other matters.
- Once a family completes their home ownership training and Sweat Equity hours and the house construction is complete, they sign a mortgage agreement and move in.
Note: The application process may take up to 4 months to complete.
