Building Homes

Habitat for Humanity Niagara is an independent, not-for-profit home builder, a member of the Niagara Home Builders' Association, and a registered EnergyStar and Tarion Home Warranty builder.  We work in partnership with today's youth to construct safe, decent, affordable homes.

Our home building program is different from other Habitat affiliates.  Students build our homes within the Ministry of Education construction curriculum.

DBSN  In 2005, we began a partnership with the District School Board of Niagara Specialist High Skills Major construction program.  Approximately twenty secondary students from area schools learn homebuilding and construction skills from their portable classroom on a Habitat home building job site.  These students construct an entire home in one school semester.

In 2007, Niagara College construction students began building Habitat homes.  These students translate their theoretical learning into practical, hands-on training using a Habitat homebuilding job site as their living lab.  Approximately sixty students rotate through the job site on a weekly basis, completing construction of a single home in one school year.

Our Student Build program provides youth with the opportunity to put their education into action, serving the needs of their community. Most students go on to join the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship program. Habitat for Humanity Niagara, our corporate partners and donors, the greater community of Niagara, and our homeowner families are proud to support our students and their future careers in construction.
